Yesterday, one my shots illsutrated artcle on "Phenomena" in the Fotopedia Magazine. Other one was selected for the topic "green" today. Why not :-)

Hey guys! I am so happy to announce that I am a winner of the gold medal and honorable mention on International Photography Awards (IPA)!!! :-) The first place I get for the shots of the butterfly wings, see the winner gallery :-) Moreover, I get the honorable mention for the shots from the Baikal, have a look on the winners gallery and honorable mentions as well to see the others... I am so happy now!!! :-) I took a part of the students category as I am a postgradual student and it was much cheaper ;-)

Both of these shots were in the past also chosen by the editors as the "Photo of the day" on the server fotopedia.com! :-)
To illustrate how much work is behind: the winner selection was done mostly with an scanning electrone microscope. As you maybe know, it takes a lot of time and concentration to prepare the sample, usually couple of days. Then you have to make a shot... after couple hours you have the grayscale image which you have to manually colorize in computer - have a look on the winning shot before and after... ;-) as for the second one, it is taken with professional camera mounted on the light microscope and under the full PC control - this shot is a combination of 19 differently focused pictures (so called Extended Depth of Field). And for a Baikal? It was a two months long and extreme outdoor trip, with 16 kilos of the camera in the small boats... :-)
Discover magazine published an article about our work on the shrimps living in the sea sponges: "Shrimp Couples Use Sponges as Gingerbread Houses". The same story but said by other word you can find on Science Now server, under the title: "Shrimp Hurt the Sponges That Shelter Them".

A new billboard for Prague ZOO :) This was definitely one of the best gorilla shooting in the Prague ZOO for me at all. This shot was taken directly from the gorilla home, so I had an opportunity to feel and hear them. Really nice moment for me...
My shot of one beautiful beech from Bohemian Switzerland has been on the cover of the Bio magazine. Hooray :-)

Yesterday evening it was a really nice moment in my life! Description of the new crustacean species, Daphnia hrbaceki sp. nov. was published in the New Zealand journal Zootaxa! Together with my supervisor Adam Petrusek & with our professor emeritus, Vladimír Kořínek, we had been working on this project since autumn 2005! So, a big part of my life has been done. Hooorrray! You can see our work here for free, it has an open access.

So many things happened last month that I did not get to publish any news here :) Summary: 5 new exhibitions, 2 new awards, new science publication with my shots accepted, new texts on the web, site connected with Facebook... Hopefully I will be able to put news separately here.
Shots from the Baikal expedition are online on Picasa. All were accepted to be published on Google Earth, so you can see also their localization. This shot was moreover chose as "Photo of the day" noasereveFotopedia.com as Lake Baikal.
